First Time Rafting? You're in Good Hands.
If you've never rafted before, you're not alone — most of our guests haven't either. Here's everything you need to know before your first trip.
What a Guided Rafting Trip Is Like
A guided rafting trip with Outdoor Voyagers is designed to be easy, fun, and stress-free — especially for first-timers. You don't need to bring anything special or know anything about rivers. We handle all the gear, safety equipment, and logistics.
You'll meet your guides at the put-in, get a thorough safety briefing, and then spend the day paddling through exciting rapids, floating through calm stretches, and enjoying the stunning Salmon River canyon. Your guides do the hard work — you just have fun.
On full-day trips, we stop for a riverside lunch prepared by your guides. On multi-day trips, we set up camp, cook dinner, and provide all camping gear.

Who Rafting Is Good For
You don't need to be athletic, adventurous, or outdoorsy. You just need to show up.

What Kids Need to Qualify
Most trips are open to ages 7+ during the regular season. During high water (typically June), the minimum age increases to 14.
To ensure life jackets fit properly, children must:
- Weigh at least 50 lbs
- Have at least a 24" chest measurement
If you're unsure whether your child qualifies, just ask. We're happy to help you figure it out.
What to Wear & What to Bring
What to Wear
- Swimsuit or quick-dry shorts
- SPF-rated shirt or rash guard
- Secure sandals or water shoes (no flip-flops)
- Hat with a retention strap
- Sunglasses with a retention strap
Avoid cotton — it stays wet and cold. Quick-dry fabrics are best.
What to Bring
- Personal water bottle
- Sunscreen (reef-safe preferred)
- Personal medications (EpiPen, inhaler, etc.)
- Rain jacket (just in case)
- A sense of adventure
We provide dry bags so your belongings stay safe on the water.
What Happens If It Rains?
We float rain or shine. You're going to get wet anyway — rain just adds to the adventure. A rain jacket can make things more comfortable, but it's not required.
If conditions become unsafe due to extreme weather, we'll communicate with you directly about rescheduling or adjustments. Safety always comes first.
What the Safety Talk Covers
Before every trip, your guides walk you through everything you need to know. It's quick, clear, and designed to make you feel confident — not scared.
- How to hold and use a paddle
- What to do if you fall out of the raft
- How to help someone back into the raft
- River signals and commands
- What to expect in the rapids
- Life jacket fit and adjustment
